Common Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

Having painful feet can really limit your mobility and your quality of life. Plantar Fasciitis is one such cause of painful feet. At Sellwood Podiatry, Dr. Brandi Myers sees the Portland, OR community and helps them live with better mobility and less pain.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

If you have heel pain, it could be from an inflammation of the plantar fascia that is found in the foot. This is a strong attachment that is comparable to a ligament that goes from the ball of the foot to the toes and should be fibrous and stretch. This helps form the foot arch. Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of that attachment which makes walking painful in the heel area. It typically is only on one foot but it is not impossible to have it in both feet at the same time.

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

Signs you may have plantar fasciitis is pain in the heel or bottom of the foot. The pain may change and be an achy pain, pain when you sit down or stand up, sharp or stabbing pain when the foot is used, or more pain in the mornings. The pain may lessen, go away, or move to different areas on the foot when you are walking or exercising.

Diagnosing Plantar Fasciitis

A podiatrist will look at your foot, your medical history, and your symptoms. They may press on the foot and check your level of pain or to feel for any abnormalities. For the best results, share with the podiatrist your daily routine and where it hurts. Also share if that pain changes and what you are doing when it changes. All of this can help diagnose plantar fasciitis. There may be some imaging tests to rule out any other foot conditions, but for the most part it is a condition that is diagnosed by symptoms and a physical exam of the foot.
